Daniel Angerer
Most sons are allowed to drive Dad?s car, Dani Angerer got to steer his plane. As a 15 year old he was clocking up flying lessons in the small family plane. Years later he swapped the aircraft for Business Jets, the B-25 and the Flying Bull Alpha Jet. He performed his wettest crash-landing with a self-built flying machine at the Red Bull Flugtag in Austria.
1. Do you remember your first flight as a pilot?
» DA: Yes, clearly. I think no pilot would forget. I was 14 and flew an ultra light aircraft on vats.
2. How many flying hours have you completed so far?
» DA: 6,100.
3. Airbus 380 or B-25?
» DA: B-25! Because that?s real flying.
4. Which plane would you like to fly if you could have any choice, and why?
» DA: F-104 Star fighter because it?s a spectacular jet and practically consists of one engine.
5. Are there any technical or design details of your aircraft that fascinate you in particular?
» DA: The 14-cylinder-double row radial engine with 1,700 hp and 42 litre capacity ? a delight to experience and to control.
6. With which Flying Bull plane would you perform a risky landing rather than opt for the parachute?
» DA: B-25 Mitchell!
7. What are the flight qualities that inspire you the most in an aircraft? And is there anything you?d criticise?
» DA: With its amazing flight qualities the B-25 is way ahead of many modern planes. Incredible, considering she was built in the 1930s. If technical problems occur, you could end up spending a lot of time fixing it. That?s why good training and a great team are so important.
8. Have you ever worried about the age of a plane once you?re on board?
» DA: Never. Our planes are checked meticulously and I know all the technicians personally. They?re all very passionate and specialists in their field, so I trust them completely.
9. What was the most turbulent flight you ever witnessed?
» DA: Turbulent is the word. I once had to perform an emergency landing, when my head kept banging against the ceiling. It was the first time I felt sick whilst steering a plane myself.
10. Is there any other aircraf t that ought to be added to the Flying Bulls collection?
» DA: F-104 Star fighter, please.
